Nick Lydon, Ph.D.

Nick Lydon Nick Lydon leads Granite Biopharma LLC, a consulting company he formed. He earned a B.S. in biochemistry from the University of Leeds, England and received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the Medical Sciences Institute, University of Dundee, Scotland. Dr. Lydon then joined Schering-Plough Corporation, where he worked from 1982 to 1985 in Paris and Lyon, France. While at Schering-Plough his research work involved studies on α,β,γ interferons. Dr. Lydon moved to Ciba-Geigy, in Basel, Switzerland where he was employed from 1985 to 1997. At Ciba-Geigy, Dr Lydon was responsible for the protein kinase inhibitor program. The most advanced drug from this program is Gleevec®, a selective Bcr-Abl inhibitor for the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), whose worldwide sales exceeded $3 billion in 2006.

In 1997, Dr. Lydon founded Kinetix Pharmaceuticals, Inc. located in Boston, Massachusetts. He served as the Chief Executive Officer and President of Kinetix from 1997 to 2000, when it was acquired by Amgen Inc. The R&D work at Kinetix was focused on the discovery and development of selective protein kinase inhibitors, which have the potential to address clinical needs in a number of therapeutic areas. Dr. Lydon joined Amgen as Vice President, Small Molecule Drug Discovery following its acquisition of Kinetix. He left Amgen in late 2002.

Dr. Lydon serves on the Board of Directors and Scientific Advisory Board of Ambit Biosciences (Avalon VI) and AnaptysBio, Inc. Biosciences (Avalon VII). Dr. Lydon has been awarded the Warren Alpert Foundation Prize (2001), the AACR-Bruce F. Cain Memorial Award and the Charles F. Kettering Prize from the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation (2002) for his contributions to the discovery and development of Gleevec®.
